This subsequent picture shows a very solemn child in a crushed silk dress. My mother always regretted that she had dressed me up at home instead of putting on the fancy dress at the last minute thus avoiding all the creases. In the solumn surrounding it is not surprising that I look very apprehensive! |

| Early schooling was at Newtongrange and Newbattle Primary Schools. Here is a picture of my first day at school. My main memory of it is being shown how to "Point to the window, point to the door, point to the ceiling, point to the floor!" - deadly dull. |
